Nancy’s heart skipped a beat when she saw Beau across the crowded coffee bar later that morning. She couldn’t help but see him in a new light after her heart-to-heart with Emily.

When he glanced up and saw her, his smile warmed her. He waved her over.

Making her way through the other patrons, she nodded and smiled to a few acquaintances.

She eyed the two to-go cups on the table. “Is one of those for me?”

“Yep. I hope I got it right.”

“Perfect. Thank you.” Nancy was touched that he’d remembered her preferred drink. She took the seat opposite him.

“You said on the phone you had several houses for us to look at today?” he asked.

“Yes. Emily offered to watch Ana. My regular sitter had a wedding today. What did you tell Rachel?”

“I hate lying, but I don’t want to get her hopes up about this house and have it fall through. I told her I had to catch up on some paperwork at the dealership.”

“Let’s hope that after today we’ll have a contract on a house and you can share the good news with her.” She smiled encouragingly. “Mary Ellen was able to prequalify you for more than we anticipated. Even though you haven’t been at the car dealership long and you moved around a lot, you were with the same sporting-goods manufacturer for eight years. That shows stability. And your income is consistently growing.”

He nodded. “I have a good shot at Salesman of the Month for December. That’ll make two months in a row. Word of mouth seems to be working.”

“Here’s what Mary Ellen was able to get for you.” She slid the paperwork across the table. “I think we can definitely find what you’re looking for in this price range. It’ll give you a larger selection than we had before.”

Whistling under his breath, Beau said, “That much?”

“Have some caffeine. It’ll help the shock.”

“No kidding.”

“Here is the printout for six houses I think fit your needs. I’ve made appointments with the owners. I didn’t bother to check if the houses we’ve already seen are still on the market. Unless you wanted a second look?”

“No. None of them worked for me.” He hesitated. “I have to admit I’m kind of nervous. We’re talking a lot of money here.”

“Nothing to it.” She smiled to reassure him. His nervousness was kind of cute. “I’ll walk you through the whole thing.”

“This is a big step for me. I didn’t figure I’d ever be a home owner. I was on the road too much.”

Reaching across the table, she grasped his hand. “But it’s so important. I think it’ll make a real difference in the way you and Rachel view home. There’s nothing like walking into a house and knowing it belongs to you. There’s something solid and enduring about that.”

“I’m counting on it.”
