Nancyâs heart skipped a beat when she saw Beau across the crowded coffee bar later that morning. She couldnât help but see him in a new light after her heart-to-heart with Emily.
When he glanced up and saw her, his smile warmed her. He waved her over.
Making her way through the other patrons, she nodded and smiled to a few acquaintances.
She eyed the two to-go cups on the table. âIs one of those for me?â
âYep. I hope I got it right.â
âPerfect. Thank you.â Nancy was touched that heâd remembered her preferred drink. She took the seat opposite him.
âYou said on the phone you had several houses for us to look at today?â he asked.
âYes. Emily offered to watch Ana. My regular sitter had a wedding today. What did you tell Rachel?â
âI hate lying, but I donât want to get her hopes up about this house and have it fall through. I told her I had to catch up on some paperwork at the dealership.â
âLetâs hope that after today weâll have a contract on a house and you can share the good news with her.â She smiled encouragingly. âMary Ellen was able to prequalify you for more than we anticipated. Even though you havenât been at the car dealership long and you moved around a lot, you were with the same sporting-goods manufacturer for eight years. That shows stability. And your income is consistently growing.â
He nodded. âI have a good shot at Salesman of the Month for December. Thatâll make two months in a row. Word of mouth seems to be working.â
âHereâs what Mary Ellen was able to get for you.â She slid the paperwork across the table. âI think we can definitely find what youâre looking for in this price range. Itâll give you a larger selection than we had before.â
Whistling under his breath, Beau said, âThat much?â
âHave some caffeine. Itâll help the shock.â
âNo kidding.â
âHere is the printout for six houses I think fit your needs. Iâve made appointments with the owners. I didnât bother to check if the houses weâve already seen are still on the market. Unless you wanted a second look?â
âNo. None of them worked for me.â He hesitated. âI have to admit Iâm kind of nervous. Weâre talking a lot of money here.â
âNothing to it.â She smiled to reassure him. His nervousness was kind of cute. âIâll walk you through the whole thing.â
âThis is a big step for me. I didnât figure Iâd ever be a home owner. I was on the road too much.â
Reaching across the table, she grasped his hand. âBut itâs so important. I think itâll make a real difference in the way you and Rachel view home. Thereâs nothing like walking into a house and knowing it belongs to you. Thereâs something solid and enduring about that.â
âIâm counting on it.â
